Gareth Walsh (b. 1981, Manchester, England) is an internationally recognized media artist, researcher, and educator working at the intersection of animation, physical form, and XR/AI. Based in Los Angeles, he leads his own studio practice while serving as Experimental Digital Arts (EDA) Supervisor at UCLA's Department of Design Media Arts.
As an artist, his body of work centers on the transformation of perception and the re-imagining of familiar objects and environments, often realized through immersive technologies, live audio-visual performance, and installation art. His work has been shown internationally with select screenings and exhibitions at venues including LACMA (Los Angeles), Nanyang Technological University (Singapore), TEDxUCLA, New Gallery (London, UK), California Nanosystems Institute (Los Angeles), 404 Festival of Electronic Art (Argentina), Simposio di VideoArte (Italy), and Prix VIDEOFORMS (France).
As a researcher, he leads UCLA's XR Art and Museums Subcommittee, developing projects and collaborations across campus that explore real-time XR, AI integration, motion capture, and live XR performance. Within the EDA, he designs and engineers a variety of custom audio-visual systems including a 270-degree immersive projection environment with surround sound; a professional "TED-style" presentation facility with 4K camera studio integration; live video streaming and broadcast infrastructure; digital signage. He additionally oversees the online event proposal system, equipment checkout, and the EDA's web and social media presence.
As an educator, he has taught media arts courses extensively across Los Angeles at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA), UCLA Extension, Pasadena City College, and Loyola Marymount University. He holds a Master of Fine Arts in Design Media Arts from UCLA (2007).
